James Pickford, the last man left on Earth, rose every morning at six-thirty, though it no longer mattered. At eight o'clock he filtered the rainwater, letting it pass through layers of sand and pebbles. At nine he tended his hydroponic garden, adjusting the lights and nutrients to obtain the meager food he enjoyed. At midday, she would sit beneath a set of mirrors that guided the sliver of light entering through a crack, providing her with her daily dose of vitamin D. In the afternoon, she would exercise and review inventories. Shortly afterward, she would clean her small room and then drink tea made from endlessly reused leaves, chatting with her mannequin named Charly. At ten o'clock she prepared a frugal supper. Her life was a precise, constant, meticulous clockwork mechanism. Thus the days passed, identical and yet bearable. Shortly afterward, she heard a noise on the stairs. She thought it was her mind playing tricks on her. Knock, knock, knock! James Pickford, I've come for you today. It came from behind the door.
